Kenya Removes Barriers For Tanzania in New Deal

Kenya has lifted 56 sanctions imposed on Tanzania setting the pace of barrier-free trade between the neighbouring countries.

Removing the barriers is a culmination of a joint meeting between Kenyan officials and their Tanzanian counterparts.

Trade Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano led the Kenyan delegation in an intensive session with Tanzanians in Kisumu.

“I am pleased to announce significant progress in addressing various trade challenges between Kenya and Tanzania. Out of the original 68 issues, 56 have been successfully resolved, paving the way for smoother trade between our nations,” Rebecca Miano announced.

As part of the agreement, Kenya will resume exporting tea to Tanzania whereas Konyagi from Tanzania will be allowed in the Kenyan market

Moreover, timber from Tanzania will be cleared to enter the country as part of the whole new trade agreement.

President William Ruto’s administration and that of President Samia Suluhu Hassan have agreed to harmonise levies and taxes to align the business policies.

“Furthermore, our bilateral discussions have addressed 14 key issues, providing clear direction on their resolution. We have also agreed on the comprehensive harmonization of levies, fees, charges and other trade-related conditions. Additionally, we have established robust monitoring and reporting mechanisms to ensure the fulfilment of our commitments,” Miano announced.

“My team and I reaffirm our commitment to strengthening our relationship with the United Republic of Tanzania. Together, we aim to foster economic growth and regional stability. Kenya is open for business!”
