Harambee Stars Prospect Zech Obiero Signs New Contract With League One Side

Date:

Harambee Stars prospect Zech Obiero has signed a two-year contract with English League One side Leyton Orient.

Obiero, 19, made his first-team debut for the O’s in April of 2022, when he started the 2-1 victory at Crawley Town, towards the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

Since his debut versus the Red Devils, Obiero has gone on to make nine appearances for the club in all competitions, including a first start in Sky Bet League One earlier this month, putting in a man-of-the-match performance during the 3-1 victory over Cheltenham Town.

The Leyton Orient academy graduate has also spent valuable time away from E10 this term, with loan spells at Cheshunt and Chelmsford City giving him valuable experience of senior football.

On signing his new deal at the club, Obiero expressed his delight by stating: ”I’m buzzing. I’m grateful for the opportunities that I have had here, and I am really happy to get it done.

“My journey at Orient has been a rollercoaster of emotions so far, and seeing other younger players such as Charlie Pegrum getting their chances has shown that there is an opportunity for me to kick on as well. I’ve just kept working until I got my chance.

“The whole team has helped me, but players like Jayden Sweeney and Ruel Sotiriou have really helped me coming through as a young lad, and I can relate to them as they’ve come through the academy too.”

O’s Director of Football Martin Ling also shared his thoughts on Obiero committing his future to the club, adding: “Zech thoroughly deserves this new two-year deal here at Leyton Orient. It once again reinforces the excellent work done by our academy players and staff, and he has worked relentlessly for his chance in the first-team, and has taken that chance extremely well in recent weeks. It’s important for us to secure the futures of our younger players, and we’re really happy that Zech has committed his future to the club.”

Head Coach Richie Wellens was also delighted to secure the future of Obiero, expressing: “Ever since I came to the club, I have been really impressed with Zech. He’s worked tirelessly on the training pitch and after spending some time away from us getting more used to senior football, he has now forced his way into the first-team picture. He’s a really exciting player, and one that we believe can play a big part in the future of our squad going forward.”
