‘Hakuna Shidaree’ Mike Sonko Tells Off Appellate Court For Dismissing His Application

Date:

Mike Sonko received a major blow on Friday after the court dismissed his application seeking to bar Anne Kananu from being sworn as governor.

Sonko filed an appeal in June 2021 requesting the court to prevent Kananu’s swearing in as Nairobi governor until a case he had filed concerning his December 2020 impeachment was heard and determined.

“Ultimately, for the foregoing reasons, our finding is that this application does not meet the threshold set for applications under Court of Appeal rules,” the court ruled.

The ruling was made by justices W. Karanja, J. Mohammed and J. Lesiit who  pointed out that Sonko has not been in office for at least 10 months as such he is effectively no longer the Governor of the County.

The judges also ruled that Sonko did not mention his wish to have Kananu restricted from  assuming office in his impeachment appeal and also the judgement issued did not address the issue.

In his appeal to bar Kananu from assuming office, Sonko argued that the appeal was of the interest of the public since he was voted to office by voters in Nairobi county.

He told the Court of Appeal that swearing in Kananu will be a violation of the constitutional rights, however the court did not agree with him.

While responding to the ruling, Sonko said that there was no problem since he still has a case in court.

“That is how things are, but we are still in court, there is no problem, we still have a case in November, the court has dismissed our application and we respect that,” Sonko said in a live Facebook video.

Aside from that Sonko told his followers to make merry since curfew had been lifted.

“Mjienjoy, cufew ndio hio imesonga, watu wajivinjari,” the former governor said.

Here is how netizens reacted to Sonko’s response to the court’s ruling.

“Aki Mike Sonko my Governor, si unialike tu for five minutes Only i enjoy a ride of your Mercedes-benz  na kama nimekosea forgive me Governor,” Aaron Derrick said.

Betty Chepchumba said, “Keep going strong,, I love your generosity and your charisma in particular.”

While Gilbert Iseki said,”Tumekumiss Kiongozi.”

Damianus Oduor: ” All shall be well with you buddy and celebration is nearer than tomorrow.”
