Former Australian Senator Seeks Help To Fly Daughter’s Body To Kenya For Burial

Date:

An Australian based Kenyan family is seeking for help to be able to transport the body of their daughter who passed away while in Adelaide, Australia.

The family of former Australian senator Lucy Gichuhi is requesting for donations to help them raise Kshs. 3.2 million that will aid in transporting their daughter’s remains back to Kenya for burial.

Gichuhi’s first-born daughter, Peris Wanjiru, passed away in on August 26, aged 33 years however the cause of her death was not disclosed by the family.

The late Peris Wanjiru

The family is pleading for help from well-wishers to help lay Peris at their Kenyan home in Mathira, Nyeri County.

The family has since created a page dubbed ‘Go fund me’ that will help with the fund drive. As per now, only Kshs.40,000 for the sendoff has been raised.

According to the family, the covid-19 pandemic restrictions have caused  air to travel to be very expensive.

“It is the desire of the family to give her a befitting send-off by repatriating the remains of the late Peris to her motherland Kenya. Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions in place that have resulted in decreased air travel to and out of Australia, the cost of this process is overwhelming to the family and thus the appeal to you for your kind support,” a statement on the page read.

The family says that the death of Peris caught them by surprise and they are still trying to come to terms with her demise.

“A little here and there will go a long way in making this possible and lessening the huge financial burden to her family as they come to terms with this devastating loss of their firstborn gone too soon,” the statement of the page read.

Gachuhi served as a senator of South Australia between 2017-2019. She migrated to Australia together with her husband Don Gachuhi and their three children in 1999.
