Kindiki Explains Why Government Has Tightened Nose on Money Transactions

The government has increased the monitoring of money transactions in the country.

According to Interior Cabinet Kithure Kindiki, this has been necessitated by the increased cases of money laundering in the country.

Kindiki added that the government is also aware that some individuals are financing terror activities.

To prevent the activities, the government has scaled up its money-monitoring efforts.

“The Government is continuously monitoring financial inflows to protect our Country from the harm of money laundering and terrorism financing in line with the obligations of the Prevention of Terrorism Act of Kenya and various United Nations Security Council Treaties and Resolutions on the prevention of terrorism and terrorism financing,” Kindiki announced.

This comes after the US exposed some Kenyan firms for money laundering including a bus company.

He made the revelations during the 2nd Quarterly Meeting (2024) of the Counter Terrorism Financing Inter-Ministerial Committee.

Musalia Mudavadi (Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs), Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u (Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Economic Planning), Justin Muturi (Attorney General), Dr. Kamau Thugge (Governor, Central Bank of Kenya), Eng. Japhet Koome (Inspector General, National Police Service), Dr. Rosalind Nyawira (Director, National Counter Terrorism Centre) and Saitoti Maika (Director General, Financial Reporting Centre) were present.
