The highly contested border is claimed by communities of Kajo-Keji county of Central Equatoria state in South Sudan and their neighbors from Yumbe district in Uganda.

According to the spokesman, the South Sudanese soldiers were doing their daily routine – enforcing cross-border movement restrictions when they were attacked.

Koang said that the area where the incident occurred is highly disputed but calm has since returned in the region after the two governments agreed to investigate the cause of the fight.

“We have requested an investigation to be done to able us to know why the Ugandan forces opened fire on our soldiers who were foot patrol and did not pose any threat to them,” the spokesperson said.
