How A Ruracio In Mwihoko Caused Online Storm.

Date:

A “ruracio” in Mwihoko, Kiambu County was the talk of town after several pictures of the event emerged online.

Kenyans took to their social media handles to express their feelings on the ceremony which was more of a money heist. The participants were all dressed in red “shukas” with face masks resembling the actors in the popular movie Money heist.

Ruracio is a common Kenyan event where married couples exchange vows. The event begins when the groom and his family pay a visit to the woman’s home in a bid to “seek for her hand” in marriage.

The peak of the event is marked by a man being subjected to some basic tests, which involves a number of women being paraded. The man is then expected to identify his woman as a sign of “truly knowing her”. Failure to identify the right woman leads to automatic fine where the man is expected to “pay for that mistake”.

You can imagine the fine such a man would pay if he is told to identify his woman from a paraded line of twenty different women with their bodies covered.

Said and done, today’s Mwihoko event also followed a similar trend with many women putting on strange masks. The man was then tasked to locate his wife with her aunties and relatives shouting in eagerness.

At some point, such ruracios have led to clashes between the side of the men and the women involved. The reason for the commotions have been associated with the expensive and demanding nature of it. While the practice has been embraced by most men, some grooms have always regarded it as a way of minting money from them
