Why Tourism, Treasury CS Nominees Might Miss Opportunity To Join Ruto’s Cabinet

Date:

A section of Cabinet Secretary(CS) Nominees who underwent vetting last week has been deemed unsuitable for their respective appointments for various reasons.

According to a report by Daily Nation, five of the nominees have divided the House  Committee of Appointments as the deadline for the committee to table its vetting report approaches fast.

Members of the committee from Azimio’s side are not contented with Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa who was nominated for Public Service and Gender Ministry, Mithika Linturi(Agriculture), Penina Malonza(Tourism), Zacharia Njeru (Lands) and former CBK governor Njuguna Ndung’u who was nominated for  Treasury.

“These nominees are not suitable to serve in the positions we vetted them for. If the committee will not agree with our view, we shall definitely draft our minority report,” an Azimio lawmaker was quoted by the daily.

Ndung’u is likely to be rejected because the Kenyan shilling freely fell during his time at the Central Bank of Kenya. He was also accused of colluding with commercial banks to make absurd profits in 2012. He however denied the accusations during vetting.

On the other hand, the Tourism CS might be disqualified because most of the committee members agreed that she performed dismally during the vetting.

“She is timid and lacks coherence for the docket she has been nominated for, which is crucial in marketing the country to the outside world. Her evading of questions during the vetting exercise makes her appointment doubtful,” a member said.

Members of the committee further say that Njeru, Lands CS nominee lacks  “competence and experience to bring change to the ministry.”

Former Meru senator Mithika Linturi also sold himself when he revealed to the committee that he had 35 civil cases, which the committee had not asked about although it was aware he was battling a series of court cases. This made the committee wonder how he will be able to serve the country yet he had so many issues to deal with. One of the members suggested that he should clear his name before he is considered for any nomination.

Jumwa’s integrity is at stake due to murder charges and a previous corruption scandal.
