Tough Times For Alchemist, Nairobi Bar Accused Of Discriminating Kenyans, As It’s Forced To Shut Down

Date:

The Alchemist Bar in Nairobi has continued to face Kenyans’ anger over reports of racism since Sunday when a video footage emerged on social media whereby a black man was turned away from an entrance line that had allegedly been reserved for the white people and Indians.

This was not the first time the bar was facing racism allegations as there were similar reports back in 2016 and 2018, with victims narrating how the security had asked them not to set foot in particular areas reserved for the foreigners.

The Alchemist bar will now be shut down as the county government of Nairobi intervenes to investigate the racism claims.

Through a statement, the bar however said that their management has never had a policy of discriminating against people who have walked through their doors.

“That being said, the last few days have shown us that we have much work to do to hire a new security team and develop new systems and processes to ensure that every single person feels welcomed,” Alchemist said.

Alchemist will be shut down for a few days as the county government seeks to;

Review the night of May 20 in order to establish whether the guest in question was denied entrance into the facility and also determine whether there is a policy in place to have separate lines for guests. Furthermore, individuals in the viral footage will be interviewed and the footage of the entire night will be reviewed.

Review past footages of the gate and inside the bar and a review of the bar in general to determine whether it has a discrimination policy.

Finally, a review of their security team based on interviews and footage to determine actions that should be taken and recommendations..

“Based on the results of these investigations, the Nairobi county government will advise on the next step and procedures. We welcome these investigations and we will wait for their results,” Alchemist noted.
