The Long Wait! Watch Siaya Locals Take Up Road Construction Task Manually After 40-Years Of Waiting

Date:

Locals of Tingare, Ulawe, and Ywaya villages in Unguja, Siaya county decided to take up the task of renovating a 3km road after waiting for decades for the government and local leaders to take up the responsibility.

According to locals, the road has been a pain in the neck for the last 40 years, especially in times of need, for example when an expectant woman goes into labor or someone falls sick and requires urgent medical attention.

The worst scenarios were witnessed during rainy seasons with students being forced to walk barefoot  to avoid  getting to school with dirty shoes and socks.

The road had made the villages inaccessible and no vehicle could pass through the it.

A video shared on social media shows the locals, both men and women, jointly working on the road to achieve their mission.

“We have had the problem for about 40 years now without the road being touched and today, citizens have come to repair this road,” one of the locals, Philip Odhiambo said.

“We saw it better to take up this task manually because of the problems we have undergone. Expectant women have delivered on the road, I am now 50 years old, since we started speaking about this road, the elders who began the job died  a long time ago without seeing success,” another local said.

Dr. John Francis Odawa from Kenyatta National Hospital, helped the locals hire a grader for flattening the road.
