Residents of Kirinyaga County were left in bewilderment after robbers were caught red handed trying to withdraw from a 54-year old woman.
The suspected robbers; two women and one man allegedly masqueraded as Airtel employees before attempting to withdraw 70,000 belonging to Beth Mbithe. However, the robbers were unlucky after the woman fought back by creating scene that attracted the public at the Baricho trading center.
It is reported that the suspects trailed the woman to her home and introduced themselves as Airtel Kenya staffs on a mission to issue new sim-cards. The woman welcomed them and it is then that the thieves got all the crucial information and transferred the money.
The woman’s son by the name Samuel Munene was around and he was amused by the transaction message that popped up from the mother’s phone. Acting smart, the son locked the three visitors inside the house without causing much drama. He then proceeded to Baricho police station and alerted the police officers
Before the police’s arrival, the three had been roughed up by the angry neighbors who had learnt of the matter. They only managed to refund 20,000 Kenya shillings by the time the officers arrived.

The three namely Benson Waigwa Macharia 38, Caroline Wanjiru 20, and Mercy Mukami were whisked away by the officers and locked in the cells. The incident was confirmed by Ndia sub-county commander Mr. Joseph Mwika. Mwika urged Kenyans to be careful with people who pose as tele-communication agents seeking personal information from them. All the three suspects hail from Thika Town.
