Two minors aged 7 and 8 from Matariba Village, Merti Sub- County in Isiolo have lost their lives after being blown up by a hand grenade.

It alleged that the minors mistook the grenade for a soccer ball. The incident has left locals wondering how the grenade ended up in their hands.

One of the minors died on the spot after the grenade blew up while the other was pronounced dead on reaching the hospital.

The incident happened outside the home of a local police officer identified as Dabaso Huka, along Yamicha- Duma road.

The police officer could however not explain how the grenade reached his home according to his statement.

Police are investigating the matter with a detective privy to the investigation saying that the police had already concluded that the device that led to deaths of the minors was a hand grenade.

The officer also revealed that detectives were following leads to establish whether the incident is linked to another one that happened earlier this year.

The incident occurred in February 21 where by police arrested three people and recovered two hand grenades, an AK-47 firearm and 128 rounds of ammunition.

The vehicle that was believed to be carrying more weapons managed to escape.

“The device could have been dropped by the criminals who escaped during the incident,” said the police source.

In a separate incident, the gun of a Mombasa police commander that was stolen has been found.

The gun is said to have been found near the commander’s home  inside a bag.

George Kingi was robbed off his gun on his way home on Monday night while in his personal car. It is alleged that his way was blocked by a tuk tuk before he was ordered out of the car.

The robbers then ordered him to surrender his gun which was loaded with 15 bullets at the time.

The police are still investigating the incident.
