Rowdy youths roughed up and beat Igembe South MP John Paul Mwirigi after a stormy meeting attended by Agriculture CS Peter Munya at Kanuni market.
Daily Nation reports that the youthful MP was rescued by police officers and his bodyguard who shot in the air to disperse the rowdy youths.
Mr Mwirigi was briefly manhandled and slapped before police shot in the air.
Igembe South Sub-county police boss Henry Akongo said the MP sustained slight injuries.
“The MP is recording a statement and we are taking up the matter. The culprits will be brought to book,” Mr Akongo said.
Trouble started when the MP arrived at the event, to launch sunflower farming by Bidco and Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (Pacja), in a convoy of hundreds of boda boda riders.
The MP is a political rival of the Pacja Executive Director Mithika Mwenda who has severally vied for the Igembe South MP and also has interest in the seat in 2022.
There was a shouting match as supporters of the MP and Mr Mwenda sought to outdo each other.

“I will not allow drunk youths to disrupt me in my work. I am focused on delivering development to Igembe South,” Mr Mwirigi said amid the heckling.
CS Munya was forced to take over the programme of the meeting as the heckling intensified and managed to address the crowd.
The MP was attacked by the mob as he left the meeting.
Mr Mwirigi reported the matter to Maua Police Station.
