Every election year, Jeremiah Nixon Kukubo always surfaces, with the aim of trying his luck on the presidency.
This year, Kukubo is among the over 40 independent candidates who will be trying their luck in succeeding president Uhuru Kenyatta.
Kukubo made his first attempt at the country’s top position in 2007. He however tailed and only managed to get 5,929 votes.
The 62-year old was born in Sirisia constituency, Bungoma county. He attended his primary school education at Ndakaru and Nakalira primary schools before joining Kimilili Boys High School where he discovered his talent in music
After completing his high school education, Kukubo left for his sister’s home in Gilgil where he developed an interest in joining the military. His ability to play several musical instruments earned him a direct ticket to the military.
“I was taken, I didn’t even wait for the exam results, they asked me to sing 2-3 songs and they took me. I was given a uniform, a house, everything and even brought me a colleague,” Kukubo said in a recent interview.
He then went for military training after KDF recruitment was done. After 8 years of being a military officer, he decided to quit.
He then embarked on a solo music career and later enrolled for online studies in US colleges though he did not mention what he studied.
Kukubo said that he was introduced to politics by Masinde Muliro, when was once an assistant minister of foreign affairs.
“He saw that I was a bit clever so he used to walk with me while I was in Nairobi although I was still doing music but he trusted me with money and would send me. Later, I overtook him in cleverness and drafted the constitution and I was taken to meet Moi,” he said.
The father of 10, with three wives, believes that he is a better leader than any of the popular contestants who have nothing to offer Kenyans.
His symbol is the horn which was a traditional communication instrument. He settled on that to alert Kenyans of the great things that await them if they elect him.
He further said that he can never vie for a junior seat since people are used to him being on the presidential race.
“I can not go and stand for an MP seat, and people have known that I am the president, I vie for the presidency. Secondly, I watched for long leaders in Kenya, I noted that Kenyans’ troubles are caused by leaders that we currently have. They are full of desire, corruption and lies, I saw that we should not persevere that,” he said
Kukubo settled on Michael Otome as his running mate.
