Date:

The death toll on the Mwembeni road accident has risen 20, after two more people succumbed to their injuries.

The fatal accident occurred along Nairobi -Mombasa highway  when a matatu collided head on with a trailer killing both drivers on the spot.

According to the police, 15 victims died on the spot while the rest succumbed to their injuries. 6 others are hospitalized while in critical condition.

In a statement, the National Police Service has blamed the Matatu driver for the accident because he was trying to overtake other vehicles on a continuous yellow line before crashing into the oncoming trailer.

“The preliminary incident report indicates that the tragedy and the senseless loss of lives could have been avoided  if the matatu driver had maintained lane discipline. All evidence points to the fact that  the driver was overtaking on a continuous yellow line at the time of the crash,” part of the NPS statement read.

At the same time the police urged motorists  to remain vigilant while on the road in order to avoid such unfortunate incidents.

“This tragedy is a reminder of the need for utmost care by all road users. Road safety is a shared responsibility and everyone must make efforts towards safeguarding their own lives and that of others

“NPS will continue enforcing the Traffic Act in a bid to ensure compliance with the requirements of the law. We further urge the public to take part in the ongoing NTSA Usalama Barabarani Programme that aims to provide,” the police statement further read.
