Kenyan Journalist Arrested at Tanzania border

Kenyan Journalist Samuel Okemwa was on Monday arrested by Tanzanian authorities at Namanga – Kenyan’s border with Tanzania.

The political commentator and online journalist was arrested by police officers stationed at the border point and had his passport confiscated after a dramatic confrontation with the police.

The details that led to the arrest of the journalist are still unclear but as per the viral video going around, Okemwa can be heard inquiring from the officers what he had done.

Unwilling to answer the journalist, a group of plain-clothed officers approached him and handcuffed him before taking him into custody.

From the video, one of the officers can also be seen confiscating the Journalist’s phone on instruction from one of his colleagues while still recording the confrontation.

Reports reaching us indicate that Okemwa was headed to Arusha where he was going to interview gospel singer Rose Muhando.

The online journalist has a large following on social media where he interviews various guests and leaders on his show dubbed The Samuel Okemwa show.

The followers of the Journalist has called on the Kenyan government to intervene and secure his release.

Okemwa’s arrest come few weeks after another Kenya reporter Yassin Juma was detained in Ethiopia while covering protests.

Okemwa became known to the public in the run-up to the 2017 elections when he earned a reputation as die-hard support of Raila Odinga
