“Ile Ya Nne Ilimshinda” Survivor Narrates Events Before The Ill-fated Modern Coast Bus Plunged Into River Nithi

Several people who survived the deadly accident at Nithi bridge when the Modern Coast bus they were traveling in lost control and plunged into the river have given an account of the events that took place before the unfortunate incident.

The 45-seater Modern coast bus was bound for Mombasa before it  plunged into River Nithi on Sunday evening at around 6.45 pm leading to the death of 35 people.

Johannes Ariyo is among the survivors who are admitted at the Chuka Referral hospital. He was traveling to Mombasa from Maua where he had gone to conclude dowry negotiations for his son Nicholas Ariyo, who is yet to be accounted for. According to him, the bus was faulty from the beginning of the journey.

“The bus had issues from the start, they struggled starting it. The journey commenced and  when we got to Igembe Central it was parked and checked by a mechanic. We resumed the journey. At Meru town, the bus was filled to capacity,” Ariyo told Citizen TV..

The journey from Meru was not so comfortable but scary one as the driver carefully drove the bus at a slow speed on slopes indicating that the vehicle had faulty brakes. Aside from that the it would produce unusual noises when the gears were changed.

“He finished a hill before we came to the accident scene, when he tried changing the gear with the faulty brakes, the bus started going at a high speed. The driver’s efforts in successfully taking the first, second and third bends paid off, but the fourth one became hard and that is when the bus flipped,” Ariyo narrated.

He was in company of his son and his fiancé, Agnes Kawira who is said to have died on the spot. The couple had plans of getting married soon.
