How Three Kamiti Convicts Travelled From Nairobi To Kitui

Date:

The police have concluded that the three convicts who escaped Kamiti Maximum Prison travelled in a private car.

The three, Musharaf Abdalla, Mohamed Abdi Abikar and Joseph Juma Odhiambo, were ferried by a private car from Kamiti prison to the village in Kitui county where they were nabbed according to An Assistant Chief at Kamuluyuni area in Kitui.

Nyamai Kalenga said that one of the convicts narrated how they traversed the 160km from Kamiti, evaded police and roadblocks and how they interacted with locals at the village by disguising themeselves.

“They first told me that they came to Machakos direct from Kamiti (using a private car). From Machakos, they boarded a public van to Kitui, where they also hoped into another PSV to Endau in Mwingi West,” Kalenga said.

Their efforts to disguise themselves at Kamuluyuni village however failed as it was discovered they were strangers.

The convicts then resolved to walking in bushes to avoid bumping into police officers or a mob.

Locals raised alarm after suspecting that the three strangers roaming in their village could have been the three convicts that were being sought by the police.

The area Chief, Assistant Chief and police reservists resolved to track them down. An eye witness, Paul Mulati narrated how the convicts behaved as they walked through the village.

“They walked in some sneaky way creating a zig-zag formation and crossed the road from one point to another. They also seemed to avoid any contact with other residents compelling them to walk through thorny bushes,” Mulati said.

The police are now looking for the person who ferried the convicts from Kamiti to Kitui.

The police are also trying to unravel how the convicts got money to sustain them and even purchase a mobile phone for communication.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said that three convicts alongside seven prison wardens will face new charges.

He further said that the government had put into place measures to ensure that such an occurrence is not witnessed in future.
