How Attempts By Three Kamiti Fugitives To Establish Contact With Their Counterparts Failed

Date:

After escaping from Kamiti Maximum prison, the three fugitives refreshed at Machakos and even bought caps to conceal their faces.

A report by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations also indicates that Musharaf Abdalla, Joseph Juma Odhiambo and Mohammed Ali Abikar bought two phones and sim cards to establish contact with their counterparts.

The fugitives were however unable to register sim cards since the shop attendant demanded that they provide their identity cards.

“They had also bought two mobile phones and were attempting to register SIM cards, when the actions of a selfless, patriotic shop attendant jeopardized their plans and saved the country immeasurably. The convicts who did not have Identity Cards had prevailed upon a shop attendant to sell and register them SIM cards, but the shop attendant would hear none of it,” DCI report read.

DCI further said that the fugitives pleaded with the shop attendant to register their cards at a fee but the attendant did not give in to their requests.

“The decision to do what is right regardless of the incentive being offered not only demonstrated the attendant’s steadfastness but also his fidelity to the law even when nobody was watching,” DCI stated.

The fugitives escaped from prison on Monday, November 15 at around 1 am by drilling a hole in their prison cell.

They then used blankets and broomsticks to make ropes that they used to scale the two high walls surrounding the prison.

Their journey however ended days later at Enzio Forest in Kamuluyuni village, Mwingi East in Kitui county where locals were able to identify them as strangers.

The trio was heading to Garissa before crossing over to Somalia when they were nabbed by police following a tip-off from members of the public.

Meanwhile, the government has said that it will reward those who aided in the capture of the fugitives after a verification process is concluded.

“Indeed, the accounts of several people who separately claim to have played a role in the capture have been reported extensively in the media. The Government intends to honor its pledge on the cash reward off. This will, however, be subject to a due verification process to ensure the reward goes to deserving recipients,” read the statement from National Police Service.
