FKF Set To Introduce VAR in Kenya Following Harambee Stars vs Zambia Disallowed Goal

Date:

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) seeksĀ  to introduce the goal line technology and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in Kenyan football.

This comes after Zambia were denied a goal in the recent friendly Match with Harambee Stars at Nyayo Stadium. Harambee starts scored two goals in the first half. In the second half, Zambia struggled to equalise after scoring their first goal in the 85th Minute. In the 88th Minute, the Chipolopolo bagged another goal only to be denied by the linesman saying the ball had not crossed the goal line.

Zambiaā€™s head coach Milutin ā€˜Michoā€™ Sredojevic couldnā€™t hide his frustration after the game, saying with Videos Assistant Referees (VAR), the goal would have been given.

ā€œWe scored a genuine second goal but it was not given. All those talking and saying that VAR is not needed in football now have got the answers today because this is comedy. On this level it is not supposed to happen by all means,ā€ Micho, clearly frustrated said after the final whistle.

He added; ā€œIn football you win or learn a lesson. We have learnt a lesson. We shall not look at the obvious intentional mistake by the second assistant referee but we look at ourselves critically.ā€

According to Citizen TV, VAR is expected in the country this year or next year. Referees in the Kenyan Premier League will see their work made easier with the new technology. The VAR requires only 6 cameras to make both ends meet.

In Africa, already VAR is installed in the Egyptian League and Moroccan league. This means Kenya will be among the few countries that have the Video Assistant Referee technology in the African continent.
