Former Citizen TV journalist Kimani Mbugua has reached out to the Kenyan public, sharing his personal struggles and requesting assistance to rebuild his life after a challenging battle with bipolar mood disorder. In a viral video posted on social media, Mbugua opened up about his journey, from the depths of illness to his determination to find a new path forward.
Mbugua’s ordeal began in 2020 when he was diagnosed with bipolar mood disorder, a mental health condition that profoundly affected his life and career. In his video message, he says, “I got out of the hospital last week, and I feel my mind has come back to normal, and I don’t want to go back to the place where I used to be.”
One of the most heart-wrenching aspects of Kimani Mbugua’s situation is his current homelessness. He disclosed that those who had previously offered him shelter had asked him to find alternative accommodation. He admitted, “I came to look for somebody else who could host me but I didn’t find. I just need your help.”
Despite these challenges, Mbugua is still hopeful he can rise again. In just one week out of the hospital, he had already developed a business plan and a proposal for a potential client, complete with a company structure. He expressed his desire for a serious business partner who could provide the financial support needed to bring his idea to fruition.
Kimani Mbugua’s decision to seek assistance publicly is an act of courage and vulnerability.
He acknowledged that suffering in silence and returning to a state of depression or substance abuse was not an option for him. Mbugua says, “I don’t want to go back to drugs,” revealing that he had successfully refrained from drug use for two months, including the abuse of marijuana and cigarettes.
He also touched upon the losses he had endured on his journey to recovery, including the friendships that had dissolved along the way.
