Esther And Ezekiel: How East Africa Got Talent Winners’ Absentee Mother Shaped Their Singing Talent

Date:

East Africa Got Talent 2019 winners Esther and Ezekiel Mutesasira are back with their earth-shaking performances.

The duo, who were born and raised in Kampala, Uganda, performed in Canada’s Got Talent auditions on Wednesday and their electrifying performance earned them a standing ovation from the judges and the audience as well.

Esther and Ezekiel performed Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown’s hit song No Air and the audience could not stop cheering them on.

Speaking before the performance, the siblings opened up on living without their mother, Julie Birungi, for five years after she divorced with their father.

“We were born in Uganda, Kampala. My mom  left  Uganda when I was 11 years old, my brother was 7 years old and we were separated for 5 years,” Esther said.

An emotional Ezekiel said that was the hardest moment of his life. He was however happy to find a home with their mother once again.

“Being without my mum for 5 years was the hardest part of my life. She decided to go and make a good life for her babies,” the 13-year old said.

On the other hand, Julie, a gospel singer and a mother of three, said that she chose to leave the country because she had decided to come out as a homosexual.

“I decided to leave Uganda because I came out because of my sexuality, being a gay woman in Uganda and married to a pastor, that is an abomination in Uganda,” Julie opened up.

Esther however admitted that their mother had played a big role in shaping their talent even though they had been apart for that long.

“Our mom has been our music teacher and she has really helped us through the phone  though we have not been with her for those years when we gonna sing somewhere, she has helped us a lot all this time of our life,” Esther said.

“I used to call them over the phone and then tell them to make the song their own song and that is what I tell them even now,” Julie said.

Julie and her children reunited in 2020.  The siblings have promised her a huge getaway in case they win Canada Got Talent.

The gospel singer and her husband pastor Steven Mutesasira divorced in 2016 and she left for Canada in 2017 leaving behind her three children. She is currently married to a female partner.
