Emurua-Dikirr MP Johanna Ngeno counting losses after a total of his 24 Holstein Friesian cattle died after they fed on a poisonous imported mineral product.
According to the legislature’s farm manager, the pedigree cattle started dropping dead one after the other just a few minutes after feeding on the mineral product.
According to our sources, the product that was fed to the cows was imported from Ireland but also available at local animal feeds stores.
“The cows began shivering, foaming in the mouth and running wild before dropping dead one after the other five minutes after minerals salt.
We immediately called a veterinary doctor who came and injected the animals in efforts to save them, but there was little he could do,” the Olekisiara farm manager Fredrick Mutai said.
From the description on the product that the animals fed, the product is complementary feeding stuff for ruminants animals and it encapsulates the feed area.

Another farm worker said it was the first time for them to use the product after they consulted their supplier who is based in Nakuru.
“We followed keenly the instructions given by the product supplier. He told us the ration for each cow is 200 grams per day mixed with other general animal feeds. That is what exactly what we did,” the farmworker said.
The farm manager is sure that the product was to blame for the death of the animals since the heifers that did not feed on the mineral did not die.
The Emurua-Dikir MP has called on the Kenya Bureau of Standard to take a closer took on the kid of animal products entering the country to shield farmers from incurring huge losses.
“It’s very devastating for a farmer to lose even a single cow due to the failure by Kenya Bureau of Standards to block the importation of poisonous cattle feeds and other products,” MP Johanna Ngeno said.
