In 2017, Charlot Magayi started Mukuru Clean Stoves after her daughter suffered burns while using a conventional stove, prompting her to look for more environmentally friendly cooking methods.
The founder of Mukuru Clean Stoves and Kenyan entrepreneur Charlot Magayi, 27, has been named the recipient of the £1 million 2022 Earthshot Prize (approx. KSH. 150M).
Prince Charles announced the 2022 Earthshot winners on Friday during a ceremony in Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States.
The annual prizes, now in their second year, were established by Prince William to support initiatives aimed at preserving the environment. For example, Charlot’s Mukuru Clean Stoves manufactures stoves that burn processed biomass made from charcoal, wood, and sugarcane rather than solid fuels, which can cause air pollution and accidents that result in the deaths of four million people annually.
While accepting the award, Charlot Magayi noted that while 200,000 families in Kenya have used her product since she started the company in 2017, the Earthshot Prize would now help her reach at least one million more households.
