Botched Bank Heist: How Knife-wielding Robber Singlehandedly Brought Equity Bank To A Standstill

Date:

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has shared details of how a knife-wielding robber successfully gained access to Equity Bank Nairobi West branch, with the aim of ‘earning a fortune where he did not sow.

The robber, identified as Boniface Ouma, 29, stormed the banking hall after severely stabbing a guard on his back.

“The guard from BM security was on routine duty conducting security checks on unsuspecting customers when the man descended on his back with the sharp object. The attacker went ahead to stab another man who was waiting to be served by a teller,” DCI said.

He then charged at the female operations manager, grabbed her, and demanded money while threatening her with the blood-stained knife.

“The shocked manager raised an alarm attracting the attention of police officers stationed at the bank, who were at the moment overseeing the delivery of a consignment of cash,” the police report further revealed.

Officers based at AP’s Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU) also responded to the call of distress. They demanded the robber to drop the knife but he declined, further threatening to slit open the manager’s throat.

The robber’s actions forced one of the police officers to open fire, shooting him in the right arm thus destabilizing him immediately.

The police quickly took charge of the situation, restoring normalcy.

“The victims of the attack whose bodies bore knife injuries were rushed to the Nairobi West hospital, where they were attended to in fair condition. Meanwhile, the suspect was rushed to Mbagathi hospital where he was admitted.,” DCI said.
