President Ruto appointed Amin Mohamed Ibrahim as the new Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
Amin emerged as the best candidate to replace George Kinoti out of 10 officers who had been shortlisted for the competitive succession process. Kinoti resigned in September 2022.
Until his appointment, Amin served as the head of the Police Internal Affairs Unit and he boasts of a 30-year of experience in criminal investigations.
According to reports, Amin joined the police force in 1989 as a cadet Inspector Trainee and over the years, he rose through different ranks including provincial CID officers whereby he served in former Western, Rift Valley, and Central provinces.
He would later join DCI headquarters as Head of Investigations in 2004. 15 years later, he was appointed as the Assistant Inspector General and Director of Kenya Focal Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons. In 2020 he was promoted to ‘Senior Assistant Inspector General, Director of the Internal Affairs Unit.’
Some of the notable cases that he has handled include Investigating and prosecuting 2007/2008 post-election violence cases in Rift Valley.
Amin also successfully investigated the assault case that involved former Deputy Chief Justice Nancy Baraza and a guard in Nairobi, the murder of Bishop Luigi Lokati of Isiolo Catholic diocese, and crimes committed by Sabaot Land Defense Force (SLDF) in Trans Nzioa
According to his educational background, the 58-year-old pursued a certificate in Ethics, Governance, and Economic Crimes at Egerton University in 2003. He joined UoN in 2006 for a Diploma in International Studies and returned to Egerton in 2008 where he pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology and Security Studies. He graduated with First Class Honors.
Amin is said to be currently pursuing a Master in Criminology and Security Management at Egerton University.
