Anglican archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit has refuted claims that ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi stormed out of church shortly after he barred politicians from addressing congregants.
Speaking to a local media house, Sapit said that Mudavadi notified him that he had to leave as he needed to attend another function before he left together with Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetang’ula stating that people got the wrong impression of the politician.
“I want to clarify that Mudavadi did not walk out of yesterday event in protest. When Mudavadi was about to leave, he informed me he would be attending another function in Murang’a,” Ole Sapit stated.
He further said that he will not change the rule that bars politicians from the addressing congregants in Anglican churches.
“In the church, worship and the word of God must take center stage. Whenever politicians are handed the microphone, they must talk politics and that is what is aired on TV. We welcome them to worship with us but they must not do politics in church,” Sapit went on.
Mudavadi has also defended himself from the drama which has left many Kenyans talking with some accusing him of disrespecting the church.
He said that he sought permission from Ole Sapit since he had to attend a function at Kinyona Catholic Church in Kigumo where he was the chief guest.
Ole Sapit blocked politicians who had attended the consecration ceremony of Rose Okeno as the bishop of the ACK Butere diocese in Kakamega at Butere Girls Secondary School from addressing congregants. Shortly after that some leaders were seen leaving while ODM leader Raila Odinga stayed put.
Sapit commended Raila for his patience. Some of the ODM leaders also criticized Mudavadi and Wetang’ula for leaving before the function ended.
