Michael Olunga and the entire Kashiwa Reysol teammates have been sent into quarantine after five positive Covid-19 cases were confirmed in the Japanese football club.
Kashiwa Reysol announced that the entire team will head into a 10-day compulsory quarantine in a bid to stem the spread of the virus.
In a statement to the press, the team announced that it was planning to quarantine at a hotel for about 10 days.
Kashiwa Reysol’s Brazilian coach Nelsinho was confirmed among the team’s personnel who had contracted Covid-19.

The Japanese club however refused to reveal the identities of players who had tested positive for coronavirus.
“We plan to quarantine at a hotel for about 10 days from Thursday. We will put the safety of everyone first, carry out PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests of all the staff, and resume the activities as soon as the safety is confirmed by the tests,” said the team in a statement.
The statement also stated that Kashiwa Reysol’s upcoming matches were cancelled as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak.
Olunga’s team was scheduled to face Tokyo FC in a Levin Cup final on Saturday 7th November. The team said that J-League would announce exact date for future fixtures.
“Due to the Coronavirus situation at Kashiwa Reysol, the 2020 J League YBC Levin Cup final between Kashiwa Reysol and FC Tokyo that was scheduled to be held on Saturday, November 7th has been canceled. The J-League will inform you of the alternative dates as soon as they are decided,” said the statement.
After 26 matches, Olunga’s side sits 9th on the J-League table with 41 points while the Kenyan international is leading in the Golden Boot race with 23 goals.
Olunga was set to travel home to feature for Harambee Star’s AFCON 2021 qualifiers clash against Comoros on November 11 and 15.
It is highly unlikely that Olunga will feature for the Kenyan national team since he is currently in quarantine in Japan.
