Tanzania and other East African Community member countries officially endorsed the candidature of Kenya’s Amina Mohamed for the World Trade Organisation top job. Becoming CS Amina’s boost to clinch the seat.
The announcement was made on Sunday, two days before the announcement of the final shortlist of two contenders for the final round of the race by the global regulator.
Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Vincent Biruta, the chairman of East African Council of Ministers, announced that Ambassador Amina had received backing from member states following a request by President Paul Kagame for her endorsement.
“Reference is made to the favorable responses received from all states of the East African Community on the…request to support the candidature of the Republic of Kenya to the post of Director-General of the World Trade Organisation. I would like to inform you that the Ambassador Amina C. Mohamed is endorsed as the candidate of the East African Community to the post of the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation,” read Biruta’s letter to counterparts in Kenya, Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania, and South Sudan.
CS Amina Mohamed is among the five candidates competing for the round to be announced on Tuesday, October 6.

Her competitors for the Director-General of the WTO seat include Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria, Yoo Myung-hee of South Korea, Mohammad Maziad Al-Tuwaijri of Saudi Arabia, and Dr. Liam Fox of the United Kingdom.
The 164-member WTO will decide which two of the five candidates will proceed to the final round that will culminate in the announcement of a new director-general by December this year.
Members are required to make a decision by consensus, which implies that endorsement like that of the EAC boots a candidate’s chances to proceed to the next round.
