Martha Karua is making waves across the globe following her appointment as Raila Odinga’s running mate in the race for August 9th general election.
Raila named Martha Karua to the role on Monday May 16th, making her the first woman to run on a major political party’s presidential ticket.
“History is calling us to close the gender gap in our country,” said Raila as he announced Karua’s appointment as his deputy on Monday.
Karua said she was deeply honored and thanked the faceless team of dreamers who had supported her.
Leading Western media like UK’s BBC and America’s Bloomberg reported on Martha Karua’s appointment following the historic moment at KICC.
Africa’s two female sitting presidents Ethiopia’s Sahle-Work Zewde and Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan personally called Martha Karua to congratulate her following the historic appointment.
Several other women in leadership around the world also congratulated Karua terming her appointment as big achievement for women in Kenya.
Even some of the female leaders allied to deputy president William Ruto also congratulated Martha Karua. Keroche breweries CEO Tabitha Karanja, who is vying in Nakuru senatorial race on a UDA ticket, couldn’t hide her joy following Karua’s historic achievement.
Women aside, also prominent male figures across the globe have been congratulating Martha Karua. Veteran Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye was quick to laud Azimio duo.

Even some of the male leaders affiliated with Ruto also congratulated Karua. Nelson Havi who is seeking Westlands MP seat on UDA ticket said she is a formidable ally to the Azimio presidential contender.
Some Kenyans on Twitter have been poking fun at Ruto’s running mate Rigathi Gachagua saying his appointment didn’t make any impact anywhere but just within the borders of Kenya.
