Some Western Kenya politicians have started growing cold feet with the growing political influence Cotu Secretary-General, Francis Atwoli is garnering.
Most of them have started to question who powerful Atwoli can be. They have even wondered why the country’s top politicians and Cabinet Secretaries, including those fearing they might be axed by the President from their positions are seeking Atwoli’s “blessing”
This comes after a governor from Central who was recently facing difficult times is said to be among the people who troopers to the Cotu’s home to ask for protection.
The politicos remember how a powerful Cabinet team landed in Western in this week after Atwoli and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya led other leaders from the region into a meeting with the President.
One thing is for a fact, Atwoli’s political influence can not go unnoticed even though he has openly declined being involved in politics or even running for a public office.
Just a few months ago, ODM leader and Jubilee Vice-Chair also visited Atwoli in his Kajiado home, even though a clear detail of their meeting was never told to the public.
The weeks later he hosted Western Leaders led by Council of Governor Chair, Wycliffe Oparanya where he appointed both Oparanya and Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa as Luhya spokesperson.

The influence of Atwoli in the political field has not sat well with some leaders. Both Musalia and Wetangula have accused of neglecting his union and concentrating in politics something they are not happy about.
Mudavadi who was previously appointed as the Lughya spokesperson by Atwoli who later dislodged him from the same position has criticized him and accused him of even bringing disunity among the Luhya people. He also accused the Cotu Secretary-General of having a hand in Wetangula’s attempted coup in his Ford Kenya Party
