Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has responded to calls by the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji to have impeached governors blocked from vying from office.
Through a tweet, Sonko said that that is not DPP’s business while telling him that he had frustrated him enough.
The Mombasa gubernatorial hopeful also claimed that the DPP had been sent by some two brothers from Mombasa whom he has been having private meetings with.
“Let the courts decide. This is none of your business I know you’ve been sent by your friends the two Mombasa brothers you normally meet at a private apartment at tamarind. You just want to provoke me. Umenidhulumu ya kutosha, hakuna nguvu kushinda nguvu ya Mwenyezi Mungu!” Sonko wrote.
While calling for the impeached governors to be blocked from vying for elective position, Haji also said that the rule of law should be respected.
“Impeached governors and those stopped from accessing their office should not be allowed to run for office. There must be respect for the rule of law.,” the ODPP said in a statement.
Haji’s statement however conflicts that of IEBC Commissioner Abdi Guliye who said that impeached governors can seek reelection when they have not exhausted appeal mechanisms after their impeachment.
That meant that Sonko can vie for office because he has not exhausted appeal mechanisms on his appeal case. Sonko moved to the supreme court in a bid to overturn his December 2020 impeachment after the High Court and the court of Appeal withheld it. The Court is yet to make a decision on the same.
