Outgoing president Donald Trump on Monday evening fired the Defense secretary Mr. Esper Mark and replaced him with Mr. Christopher C. Miller.
Mr. Christopher is the Director of of the National Counterterrorism Center. He was unanimously voted in by the Senate to head that docket. Through a twitter post, Donald Trump wrote:
“I am pleased to announce that Christopher C. Miller, the highly respected Director of the National Counterterrorism Center (unanimously confirmed by the Senate), will be Acting Secretary of Defense, effective immediately. Chris will do a GREAT job! Mark Esper has been terminated. I would like to thank him for his service.”
Mr. Esper and President Trump had been at loggerheads with one another even before elections. It was alleged that the president planned to fire him immediately after the elections. Interestingly, even after the elections when Biden was leading, it was reported that Mark Esper prepared a resignation letter for president Trump. It seems this move to prepare the president’s resignation letter just heightened the already bad blood between them.
Mark openly disagreed with Mr. Trump on how his government responded to the racial against racial injustice when George Floyd was murdered in cold blood. He refused to support the use of Insurrection Act that would see military troops deployed on American streets to deal with the unrest.

Having been defeated in the presidential election by Joe Biden, it is not certain whether Mr. Trump’s resolve to fire Mr. Esper is of any meaningful consequence since constitutionally, Biden is the president-elect. Whether President Biden will reinstate him after the official inauguration ceremony is a matter of wait and see.
