Tough Conditions Didmus Barasa Must Meet For Him To Enjoy Freedom After Being Charged With Murder

Date:

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has been released on a Kshs10 million bond and a surety of Kshs5 million bond by a Bungoma court following the brutal murder of Brian Olunga, an aide of his political opponent, Brian Khaemba.

The court however set several tough conditions before he is granted his freedom.

Firstly, Justice Patrick Otieno ordered him against setting foot in Bungoma county, where the crime occurred on August 9 moments after voting had been concluded.

Aside from that, he was also ordered to surrender all his firearms and passports as well as his passport. He was also barred from coming into contact with witnesses and commenting on the case.

The court however gave him three hours to pick his election certificate from his constituency Returning officer and his belongings in company of police officers.

Barasa was arraigned in court earlier on Wednesday to take a plea on the charges against him. He however pleaded not guilty.

The lawmaker reportedly shot dead 21-year old Olunga at Chebukwabi polling station in Kimilili, where he was witnessing the vote counting process.

The accused later went into hiding before showing up  days after the police launched a manhunt for him.

A post-mortem conducted on Olunga’s body indicated that he died of excessive bleeding after being shot at a close range on his forehead. The bullet lodged itself on the right side of his brain.

The deceased was laid to rest last Saturday at his parent’s home at Kelanda village, Malava constituency in Kakamega county
