A police dog on Friday died from choking after swallowing a tennis ball during training in Lunga Lunga, Kwale county.
According to a police report the handler of the dog Constable Amos Langat was on a normal training session when the incident occurred.
“PC Langat struggled to rescue the police dog but it succumbed,” the report filed at Lungalunga police station says.
The police dog has been identified as Rina, service number 1395.
Its handler Mr. Langat is also nursing injuries on his right finger after the dog bites him while trying to save its life by removing the tennis ball from its throat.
The postmortem that was done on the dog at the Msambweni Referral Hospital found the ball stuck in the dog’s windpipe.
The dog has left a good record in the police service. According to Lungalunga deputy county commissioner Joespdert Biwort, the dog once sniffed out eight kilograms of heroin.
In another scenario the police dog that was attached to KRA section located three kilograms of narcotic drugs.

The area police boss Mr. Peter Nzimbi said the dog – a German Shepherd was brought to LungaLunga last year. it dies at the age of 11 years.
