Shock and panic engulfed the Kongelai area of Kapenguria in West Pokot County after a ‘dead man’ appeared at his funeral.
Locals mourned the death of the man identified as Muriumeler after presuming he was dead only for him to appear.
According to the locals, a body of a man was discovered in a nearby thicket and the locals positively identified the body as Muriumeler’s.
This was after they were informed about a strong odor from the nearby bushes by a group of women who sold vegetables.
Upon checking, they discovered a decomposing body of a man resembling that of Muriumeler.
“We experienced a strong odour which kept on increasing each passing day and informed other residents and upon investigation, we found a decomposing body resembling Muriumeler,” a local said.
Muriumeler’s family was informed about his death and immediately funeral plans commenced and a burial date was even set.
Unaware of what was transpiring in his home village, Muriumeler went about his daily business until he was informed by people from his village that he was being mourned.
Shaken by the news, he gathered courage and called his brother who confirmed what the villagers had told him.
“I was going about my business in Chepareria market when I noticed all the people I met from my village kept on telling me ‘pole’ and revealed that people were mourning me in my village,” Muriumeler said.
He decided to go back to his home village where he found people mourning him.
“I had a hard time proving to them that I was alive as they kept telling me that I had died and it was my spirit that had visited them,” he said.
The police had to intervene to stop the burial plans and left with the body which was transferred to Kapenguria morgue. The body is yet to be identified.
