Professor Drags Strathmore University To Court Seeking Kshs26 Million Compensation

Date:

A former senior lecturer at Strathmore university has sued the institution over intellectual property infringement and career sabotage.

Professor Fred Ogola, who served at the institution as a senior lecturer for 9 years has filed a case at the high court seeking Kshs26 million compensation with accrued interest.

Through his lawyer Morara Omoke, the Ogola has accused Strathmore university of “blocking access top his work email” as quoted by the nation.

The move to block his email saw him unable to access his teaching notes, which he has been working on for 12 years, consultancy and research materials, book projects and publications that he had stored in the email address.

It further hindered him from using his electronic device thus ruining his career and ability to generate income through consultancy.

Aside from that, Ogola further accused the private institution of granting him an unfair hearing,  wrongfully dismissing him, damaging his reputation and also witholding his three month salary. He was earning Kshs75,000 at the time.

The Ksh26 million compensation seeks to settle the three month-salary that amounts to Kshs125,000 and Ksh4, 093, 750 that accrued for leave days, which he never went as he was teaching.

He went a psychiatric treatment that cost him Kshs15,000 and transpport, opportunity and time costs amounting to Kshs780,000.

“I suffered reputational damages as the result of the unlawful dismissal. The university alleged gross misconduct which is an accusation that has far-reaching and long-term consequences on my career and reputation,” he said in court documents.

Ogola joined the institution on May 1, 2012 as a lecturer at the Strthmore Business School and was dismissed from the institution on April 26, 2023.
