Towards the end of the year 2019, Kirinyaga County Governor Ann Waiguru stated that she agrees with most sentiments expressed by Kenyans on social media regarding corruption.
She stated that indeed corruption has slowed down development and crippled the economy adding that Kenyans should join hands in fighting the scourge. Waiguru added that public funds should be used to benefit the people and not end up in the pockets of a few individuals.
Yet months later, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is looking into corruption allegation claims from impeachment documents presented against her. According to EACC Central Regional Manager Charles Rasungu, one of the cases involves several tenders allegedly influenced by the governor.
Documents cited in the impeachment motion against Waiguru claimed that she influenced tender processes in favor of Velocity Partners Limited. It is further alleged that monies to the tune of Ksh. 10 million were paid to the Governor for trips that allegedly did not take place or were not official.
Why would one say public funds should not be used for personal purposes yet she is the one being investigated on corruption allegations?
Yes, she is still the Kirinyaga county Governor but how long will it take before other corruption allegations against her surface again? Now that the Senate saved her from impeachment, what is she going to do not to be subjected to such allegations again? Or is it just politics? Are her opponents playing dirty? Don’t they say politics is a dirty game?
The governor said her clearance by the Senate marks a remarkable and historic victory in her political life. She stressed that her impeachment was all a choreographed plan of events that was aimed at tarnishing her name.

“I’m more resolved to ensure the residents get the service they deserve. It is unfortunate, the political innuendos have robbed the residents of their right to receive service from their leaders but I assure them that I will do my best to ensure that Kirinyaga Rising vision is achieved,” she said in a statement.
She says the fight against corruption can not be won without evaluating the forces involved. Before it was the National Youth Service scandal which she was also victorious. This time it is the Impeachment motion. Which again she won. Is she just prone to corruption allegations? You have to give it to her. She keeps winning.
