National Police Service on Monday, December 4 launched a manhunt for a driver on a trailer involved in a tragic accident at the Kikopey Trading Center along the Gilgil-Nakuru highway.
The accident occurred on Sunday night when the driver of the said trailer lost control and hit two passengers who died on the spot.
The trailer then preceded to ram over roadside structures killing three others.
National Police Service revealed that the three were killed while playing a pool table game.
“Preliminary reports suggest that the driver who was heading towards Nakuru direction lost control and hit two male adult pedestrians killing them on the spot,” a police report released on Monday, December 4 read in part.
“The same vehicle rammed onto iron sheet structures a few metres from the road killing three male adult persons who were inside playing pool table game. The same trailer caused massive damage to property, including three motor vehicles that were at a yard; a Land Rover, Peugeot 405 and Isuzu Tropper,” it added.
The driver however fled from the accident scene.
“Efforts to arrest the driver of the ill-fated vehicle are underway after he escaped the scene of the accident,” NPS announced.
The accident piled pressure on the government to institute other safety measures after stats from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revealed that 3,609 people lost their lives in road accidents in 2023.
In their October Road Safety status report, the NTSA said January recorded 379 fatalities, February had 340, March (389), April (357) and May had 340.
June recorded 439 fatalities, July -325, August -327, September- 338 and October had 330 cases.
