Murkomen Recommends Rehabilitation of JKIA Runway to Fix Cracks

A committee constituted by Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Thursday, November 30 made several recommendations to fix the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

After two weeks of thorough investigations, the committee recommended for the rehabilitation of the runway to fix both longitudinal and transverse cracks.

The cracks reportedly affected the smooth movement of the planes in the international airport thus posing a risk to travellers.

Other Recommendations Included

1. Stone pitching along road T2 to improve the drainage situation
2. Decluttering of structures on driveways
3. Introduction of angle parking instead of flash parking within main drop-off points in the airports
4. Construction of footpaths in circulation areas
5. Erection of canopies on critical walkways e.g. the Primary Screening Yard (PSY)
6. Immediate installation of a new roof for the entire terminal building 1B, 1C and 1D, with proper rain harvesting, solar and other services anchorage provisions.
7. Immediate reorganisation of the internal spaces at JKIA to reduce redundancies, and provide adequate sanitary facilities, efficient passenger processing and optimum ventilation and lighting.
8. The construction of rapid exit taxiway.
9. Extension of Taxiway G at the threshold of Runway 24.
10. Rehabilitation of runway AGL, longitudinal and transverse cracks.
11. Restoration of friction levels.
12. Construction of new passenger and cargo aprons.
13. Immediate commissioning of the 2No. new 2MVA standby generators to provide primary backup.
14. Immediate provision of the additional secondary backup generator to Terminals 1A, 1E and 2.
15. Replacement of all defective screening equipment at the baggage handling system with 3D technology.
