Murang’a senator Irungu Kang’ata has demanded that he gets a public apology from three media houses following the embarrassment they caused him.
Kang’ata has threatened to sue Citizen Digital, Kameme FM and K24 for defamation after they shared a fake video of him attending the Tuesday’s Senate sitting in a place that was believed to be a bar.
The videos posted alluded that Speaker Ken Lusaka blocked him from addressing the house after it was discovered that he was in a pub.
Kang’ata complained to the senate that the video had been manipulated to create an impression that he was in bar.
According to reports, the senator logged into the senate’s proceedings while at Sabina joy, a popular drinking joint along Moi Avenue in Nairobi.
“Citizen digital, Kameme FM and K24 should follow suit (referring to the Star Newspaper), otherwise we meet in court for a suit seeking hefty damages await,” reads the statement that Kang’ata posted in his social media.
The Star newspaper has since apologized for embarrassing Kang’ata and uploaded the correct version of the video in their social media pages.
“We apologize for a video posted of Murang’a Senator Irungu Kang’ata logging in to Senate proceedings allegedly from the bar, we have since established that the video clip was manipulated,” the publication stated.
Other senators also supported Kang’ata’s demands saying that those responsible for manipulating the video should be punished since they also tarnished the Senate’s good name.
“When we were complaining about the manipulation of servers, this is exactly what we were saying. First, you manipulate numbers, you manipulate a voice, the next time they’re going to manipulate you. They’re going to show you without clothes but with your voice,” Makueni Senator, Mutula Kilonzo Jr, stated.
On his side, Bungoma senator Moses wetang’ula said that, “Mr Speaker, the said bar is not just a bar. It is a place of sin and for years it has been a dirty place. For the media to pick that kind of gutter reporting and associate the place and malign him is something we must all condemn.”
