Migori County Assembly Speaker Boaz Okoth Adjourns Assembly Sitting For 3 Weeks Following Chaos

Date:

Migori speaker Boaz Okoth on Wednesday adjourned the county assembly sitting for three weeks throwing efforts to impeach Governor Okoth Obado in a limbo.

In a letter, the Speaker said the fracas witnessed in the assembly was the main reason for adjourning the sitting.

An MCA from Migori broke an arm during the melee at the assembly ahead of the planned tabling of the impeachment motion.

Nominated MCA Mary Ogodo was assaulted during the chaos and left a broken arm.

The chaos forced the sergeant-at-arm to run away with the mace, a symbol of power in the House, as they left members assaulting each other both physically and verbally.

MCA Ogodo was rushed to St Joseph Mission Hospital

“She is in hospital, her left arm has been broken and she is receiving treatment. She can’t talk right now. She is in stable condition,” an aide told a local publication.

Tension at the assembly during the morning session after North Kanyamkago MCA Georga Omamba received orders from Migori High Court reinstating him as Deputy Speaker.

Members of the County Assembly impeached Omamba in May 2019 together with assembly clerk Tom Opere, with Bukira East MCA Mathews Chacha and Emmanuel Abala taking over of the seats.

On Wednesday, chaos began after pro-Obado MCAs led by Kaler MCA Thomas Akungo walked into the house which was in session and disrupted the session.

“The five MCAs were hiding in one of the offices in the assembly controlled by Obado’s relative before they made their way into the assembly and started creating chaos,” a staff said.

In the ensuing melee, the session was disrupted with Ogodo, who is believed to be in support of Obado’s ouster being attacked. She blamed Akungo for the melee at the assembly.
