A police officer who went missing 9 months ago and even got fired and charged in court for absconding duties has resurfaced.
Constable Reuben Kimutai who was attached to the Makadara law courts as an aide ‘disappeared’ when he was to proceed to leave after being knocked down by a hit and run driver on December 20, 2020.
He was admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital as Augustine Neto and taken to ICU and has been in a coma since the day of the accident.
In January Kimutai never showed up at his place of work and his family also had not seen. A search for him was conducted but he was never found.
An arrest warrant was issued against him for failing to show up at work.
A formal report was filed in January 19, 2021 whereby he was accused of deserting work. The court issued an arrest warrant as well and he was even charged in absentia.
The court ordered the police to find Kimutai and present him in court on March 22 however that did not push through forcing the magistrate to allocate them another date.
The National Police Service went ahead to start the procedure of removing his name from the pay roll.
Towards the end of last month, Kimutai started regaining conscious and even told the doctors his real name while informing them that he was a police officer. He also told the doctors that he had a niece in Makadara.
The hospital wrote to the National Police Service as well as the Makadara Law Courts, where the case against the officer was withdrawn and the process to reinstate him on the payroll was started.
“When he had regained some level of consciousness, contact tracing through the National Bureau of Registration identified him as Rueben Kimutai Lel of ID number 6846690. The name indicated on admission was, therefore, changed in his hospital records,” KNH said in the letter
“He has recovered from the fracture but has not fully recovered his memory. The case is referred ‘To whom it may concern’ to help the patient get discharged from the hospital,” the hospital further said.
