Stephen Kigathi’s rally in Kikuyu was brought to an end abruptly after his opponent, Owen Ndung’u of Jubilee, showed up splashing notes of unknown value to the crowd that had attended the rally.
According to reports, Ndung’u, who was also on a campaign trail, was atop his campaign vehicle when he disrupted Kigathi’s rally. The crowd scrambled for the notes leading to a total disruption of the rally.Â
Kigathi, who is vying for the Kikuyu parliamentary seat on a KANU ticket, complained about the issue while speaking to the press and urged the Independent and Boundaries Commission to take action against the Jubilee aspirant over the electoral offense.
“I am going to the IEBC to make sure that they enforce their Electoral Code of Conduct and to ensure that the candidate (Ndung’u) rectifies the mess he has done today,” he said.
Ndung’u however denied any wrongdoing saying that he was just gifting locals as he went about his campaigns. According to him he was unaware that a rally was ongoing.
“Personally, I have not witnessed any violence. I was on my road tour and as is the norm, I bought a few items from the traders in the market and greeted the people,” Ndung’u defended himself.
The incident came just hours after KANU was forced to address reports that Kigathi had backed out of the race in favor of Ndung’u.
“Please treat this fake message with contempt. Hon Stephen Kigathi Kionywe is firmly in the race for Kikuyu Constituency member of parliament,” KANU’s statement read.
