John Serut’s Medical Appeal Gone Wrong As Netizens Get Bitter Over His Dark Past

Date:

Former Mt. Elgon MP John Serut is battling cancer and his hospital bill has hit Kshs20 million forcing his family to appeal for support.

In a twitter post, Serut’s daughter  Michelle Chemoss Serut asked Kenyans to help in offsetting the bill.

“Hey guys, so a lot of you don’t know me but I’m here requesting your help today. My father’s name is John Serut and he’s been unwell for a while now. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in January of 2020. Since then, we’ve had medical bills totaling to about 20 million,” Chemoss said.

“Multiple myeloma is a type of blood cancer that affects multiple organs e.g., the kidneys, bones and liver. So far, we’ve handled this as a family but we’re now reaching out to you for help,” she went on to explain.

Chemoss further explained that the family needed about Kshs6 million shillings to clear the hospital bill.

“Our most recent bill was slightly over five million and we need the amount on top to cater for an insurance cover as we have exhausted the existing one due to bills amounting to 14 million this year alone. Below is the link. Please retweet widely. Thanks in advance,” reads the appeal.

She however received a backlash from a section of netizens who dug into her father’s dark past.

Serut was accused of being part of the Sabaot Land Defence Force (SLDF) Janjawit and Moorland militia groups that caused clashes and murders of locals in his hometown.

Here is how a section of twitter users responded to his medical appeal.

Another netizen shared a video of Serut allegedly threatening a university student in 2015.

Serut lost his parliamentary seat in the 2017 general elections.

While appearing before the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC) in July 2011, he denied being involved with the militia groups.

SLDF operated in Mt Elgon from 2005 and has been accused of killing more than 600 people, and of committing a variety of atrocities including murder, torture, rape, and the theft and destruction of property.
The leader of the group, Wycliffe Matwakei Komol, was killed by the Kenyan Army on 16th May 2008.
