“I Was Not Given Any Money” Githeri Man Speaks On The Fake Promises He Received After Being Famous

Date:

Martin Kamotho Njenga alias Githeri man became an internet sensation during the period of 2017 General Election.

This is after a photo of him enjoying Githeri, a local dish made of maize and beans, that was inside a transparent polythene bag while on a queue waiting to cast his vote, went viral.

The father of one had gone to vote at a school in Kayole, when a common citizen saw him enjoying his meal and thought it was funny. He took his photo and posted it on social media and that is how it ended up being viral.

Over the years little has been heard about Githeri man, who works as a cleaner at the Nairobi county government. He has been working there since 1989.

Speaking to Mungai Eve, Githeri man said that he was worried when a lot of people started looking for him. However, he got the opportunity to visit big media houses in the country and since then he has never gotten another chance.

“If you hear that you are being looked for by people in big cars won’t you get scared? You have to get scared,” He said in the midst of laughter while adding that,” because you don’t know why they are looking for you.”

At that moment, he went to hide at his aunt’s place in Matopeni so that those looking for him could find him there and get him out of there.

“They came, people from KTN, Nation, almost all of them. I then asked God to grant me strength because I had not wronged anyone,” Githeri man said.

While his fame lasted, Githeri man received promises from various companies that had intentions of uplifting his life but most of them never came to pass..

“I got promises from many companies like biscuits, salt, Chandaria. I used to get messages from them. The only person I talked to was from the Username company. They promised to give me a piece of land. I was also given two suits from a clothline in Yaya Center but I have never picked other vouchers, they told me to wait. I have never received other promises,” he said.

He denied claims of receiving lots of money as people had thought, saying that he only got lunch from the head of state and nothing more.

For him, his life before and after fame is just the same because he never put himself at a level that does not match his salary.
