After the four commissioners disowned the results declared by IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati, Juliana Cherera has resigned as vice chair and IEBC commissioner. Her resignation comes two days after Justice Nyang’aya, the commissioner of the IEBC, left his position on Friday.
Cherera emphasized that she realized her continued employment at the commission was no longer tenable and made the decision to leave after giving the current state of the commission due thought and consulting with her family and attorneys.
According to Cherera, during her time as a commissioner, she discharged her responsibilities with utmost diligence and care, and she made a concerted effort to assist the commission in resolving corporate governance issues in spite of extremely challenging conditions.
“As vice chairperson, I always advocated for fair treatment and equal opportunity for all staff,” she said.
On Monday, Juliana Cherera informed President William Ruto in writing that she was resigning from the electoral body.
“It is with immense woe that today I tender my resignation as commissioner and vice chairperson of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission,” Cherera wrote.
Ruto created a nine-member tribunal, presided over by Judge Aggrey Muchelule of the Court of Appeal, to investigate the suspended commissioners.
The team also includes joint secretaries Kibet Kirui Emmanuel, Irene Tunta Nchoe, Mathew Njaramba Nyabena, Carolyne Kamende Daudi, and Col. (Retired) Saeed Khamis.
