How To Curb Red Eye Disease That Is Spreading Rapidly In Coast

Date:

The health Department in Mombasa County has issued an alert on the spread of conjunctivitis, popularly known as red eye disease.

In a statement, the county government urged residents to observe hygienic measures to curb the spread of the highly contagious and infectious disease

The disease is caused by viruses, bacteria, allergens and irritants. Symptoms include, swollen eyes, pain, redness, itchiness, blurry vision and eye discharge. Those experiencing the above mentioned symptoms have been advised to seek medical attention immediately.

In a bid to curb the spread of the infection, Mombasa residents have been advised to wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 minutes, avoid sharing personal items such as towels, pillows, make-up kits etc.

A further guideline include; avoiding touching and rubbing eyes and face.

It is believed that the disease may however spread from the neighboring Tanzania.

Tanzania issued an alert on the outbreak on January 16.

Several people who have been affected by the disease include Tanzanian singer Rosa Ree and her family, Kenyan dancehall singer Dufla Diligon among others.

“I thought hii story ya red eye ni mimi tu!!! A few days ago I developed a red eye hadi sahizi iko I thought ni usingizi wapi I have been sleeping mapema lakini wapi is still there!! Advice please!” Dufla shared online.
