Nzanzimana Ellie, a Rwandan boy who was born differently, made headlines months ago when his story was featured on Afrimax.
Ellie was the laughing stock of his village, neighbors referred to him as monkey or gorilla because of his looks and even experts advised that taking to school would be a waste of resources as he had no brains or common knowledge and would not even concentrate on class.
Ellie would spend most of the time in the forest, and would run into hiding whenever he saw people. He would even feed on grass and wild fruits. He only lived with his mother.
Well-wishers however came to his rescue and the 21-year old was enrolled in Ubumwe Community Center about 6 months ago so that he would learn some surviving knowledge and how to live with people and he has now completed his first term.
Afrimax reports that Ellie has made a big step for the time that he has been at the institution thus disapproving those who thought otherwise.
According to his class teacher Bayisingize Rosine, most people never expected any positive results from the boy but the teachers put their trust in him and the process and they did their best.
Currently, Ellie has learnt to concentrate in class and he is now used to being around people even though at first it was quite difficult for him.
The boy has been taught on how to behave and not fight with others. On academics, he is doing better since he has learnt how to hold a book and pencil and a bit of coloring.
“We teach them basic skills that can be applied everywhere,” Rosine said.
Ellie’s lessons on how to live a normal life began from scratch. He was taught how and where to ease himself when necessary, how to eat with a spoon, a cup, sanitation, among other basic things.
Before closing school,he was being taught how to ride a bicycle as an extra co-curricular activity after discovering that he had an interest in bicycles.
