Governor Rasanga Entertains “Kanungo” Hitmaker

Date:

Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga has come out to help Ohangla musician, Otieno Aloka who was facing two years imprisonment in Kisumu.

Otieno Aloka whose real name is George Adinda Otieno, was on Monday, August 31 sentenced to two years in prison, or pay Ksh 120,000 fine after pleading guilty to performing obscene music contrary to Kenya Film and Classification Board (KFCB) regulations.

The Ohangla star was arraigned in before the Kisumu Chief Magistrate Peter Gesora.

Before his arrest, Aloka had earlier gone to Kisumu Central Police Station to demand back Ksh 15,000 he had paid as police cash bail when he was previously arrested.

Aloka told the police that the Kenya Film Classification board had dropped charges against him, and, therefore, the case was no longer active in court hence he needed back his money.

In return, the police arrested Aloka and took him Kisumu Law Courts, where he pleaded guilty to charges that had, originally, been leveled against him by the Ezekiel Mutua-led board.

KFCB charged the Kanungo hitmaker with four accounts – distribution and exhibition of unclassified content, displaying obscene audio-visual content, contravention of section 4(2) of the Films and Stage Plays Act, and failure to obtain a filming license.

However, on August 28, KFCB boss, Ezekiel Mutua wrote a letter to the DCI in Kisumu saying the board dropped charges against the musician after he apologized to the Board and agreed to comply with the provisions of the law in his future productions and performance.

“The purpose of this letter is to inform you that the Board does not wish to pursue this matter in court and would like to engage in alternative dispute resolution with the artiste. Consequently, we request you to allow us to pursue the matter out of court,” Mutua said in the letter.

Dr. Ezakiel’s directive was not enough to save Aloka from the grip of justice.

The musician pleaded guilty to all the charges that were pressed against him, and he was sentenced to two years in jail or pay a fine of 120,000 fine.

Aloka was unable to raise the fine but the Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga come to his rescue and helped him raise the money.

Aloka was arrested on August 21 after a complaint was lodged against his song ‘Ochot Madhako’ (Dholuo word meaning ‘a female prostitute’).

Following backlash from the social media, the artiste apologized to his fans saying the song was not meant for public consumption but was a special request from his client in Germany.

“I never meant to disrespect women and they are the people I want to sincerely apologize to. This song was for a client,” he said on Facebook.
